Trees, shrubs, or woody climbers. Leaves alternate, simple, estipulate. Inflorescnce an axillary or terminal spike, raceme, or panicle. Flowers small, mostly bisxual, actinomorphic; calyx minute; petals 4-5, free or somewhat connate, valvate; stamens as many as and opposite to petals, free or adnate to base of petals, anthers 2-locular, opening longitudinally; disc various, often annular; ovary superior or half-inferior, 1-locular, style short or wanting, slender, stigma entire or slightly lobed; ovules pendulous. Fruit a drupe; seed with copious oily-starchy endosperm; embryo small, straight.

About 9 genera and 60 species in tropics, mostly in Africa and Asia; one genus in Taiwan.
