型態特徵
Evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate, entire, petiolate, estipulate. Flowers in spikes, racemes, panicles, or cymes, bisexual, actinomorphic; calyx connate into a tube, the tube cup- or disc-like, accrescent or not in fruit, slightly lobed or truncate; petals usually 4–5, free or connate, valvate; disc various, often annular; stamens as many as and opposite the petals, reduced stamens sometimes present, anthers 2-locular, opening lengthwise by pore-like slits; ovary slightly immersed in the disk, 1–3(5)-celled, each cell with 1–5 ovules, placenta axile, free central or pendulous. Fruit a nut or drupe, enclosed by the enlarged calyx tube or not; seed 1, embryo straight, endosperm copious.

About 26 genera with about 260 species in the tropics or subtropics. Two genera and two species in Taiwan.

Flowers in axillary racemes or panicles; pedicels bracteate, short; calyx cup-like, truncate or slightly toothed, enlarged when fruiting; petals 3–5, free or somewhat connate at base; stamens 3, opposite the petals; staminodia 6; ovary superior, 1-celled above, 3-celled below, 3-ovuled, stigma 3-lobed.
