型態特徵
Annual or perennial aquatic herbs with horizontal or vertical rhizomes. Leaves simple, alternate, long-petiolate, submersed and/or emergent, blades linear, sagittate, cordiform or orbicular. Flowers axillary, solitary on long peduncles, emergent, bisexual, actinomorphic, hypogynous to perigynous; sepals 4-6, green to petaloid; petals 0-numerous; stamens numerous, anthers elongate; ovary compoud, of 3-35 united or partially united carpels, multilocular; stigmas many, united into a disc with radiating rays; ovules numerous, usually anatropous, rarely orthotropous. Fruit a spongy berry, many-seeded; seeds ovoid to subovoid, operculate, mostly arillate; embryo small, with 2 thick, fleshy cotyledons; endosperm scanty.
