Herbs, shrubs, or trees, sometimes climbing, sometimes spiny, often glandular. Leaves simple, alternate or opposite or whorled, estipulate. Inflorescence various, usually an axillary or terminal cyme, often involucrate. Flowers perfect or unisexual, often bracteate; calyx corolloid, with a 3–5-lobed tube, lobes valvate or plicate in bud; corolla absent; stamens 1 to many, free or connate at base, anthers longitudinally dehiscent, dorsifixed; ovary superior, 1-celled, style 1, stigma capitate or variously devided. Fruit an achene or nut, ridged or winged, usually enclosed by the lower portion of the calyx; seed 1, embryo straight or curved.

About 30 genera, and about 300 species, in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions of both hemispheres; two native genera with three species in Taiwan.
