Aquatic perennial herbs with thick fleshy creeping rhizomes; rhizomes with distinct nodes and internodes, rooting at nodes. Leaves simple, peltate, emergent, long-petiolate, blade orbiculate, entire, depressed centrally; petioles 1-2 cm long, short spined. Flowers solitary, bisexual, actinomorphic, elevated above the leaves on long terete peduncles; perianth caducous; sepals 2-5; petals 20-30; stamens numerous, filaments elongate, anthers introrsely or latrorsely dehiscent; carpels 2-30, free, embedded in the truncate surface of the elarged receptacle, stigma circular; ovule 1, pendulous, anatropous. Fruit aggregate, embedded in the enlarged receptacle, globose or elongate-ovoid; seeds exalbuminous, with minute endosperm; embryo with two thick fleshy cotyledons surrounding a green plumule.
