Perennial to biennial herbs; rhizome short, usually with fibrous roots at nodes. Leaves radical, tufted, somewhat grass-like, linear to lanceolate or broadly lanceolate. Flowers many, white or white tinged with pink, racemose, bracteate; scape from leaf axil or leaf clusters, erect or ascending; bracts lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, usually smaller upward; perianth tubular, free upward; segments 6, not widely opening; persistent in fruit. Stamens 6, included, filiaments flat to filiform; anthers ovoid to subglobose; ovary partly adnate to perianth tube, half inferior, 3-celled, smooth; stigma 3-lobed; ovules many, in 2 series in each cell, anatropous or semi-anatropous. Fruit a capsule, loculicidally 3-valved. Seeds many, oblong. Basic chromosome number X=13.
