型態特徵
Shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite, sometimes alternate, coriaceous, more or less pellucido-punctate, simple, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, solitary in the axils or in corymbs or racemes, usually bracteate; calyx-tube more or less adnate to the ovary and often elongated, sepals 4–5, imbricate, or rarely absent; stamens mostly numerous in several rows, often in fascicles opposite petals, filaments distinct or partially united, anthers 2-celled, introrse, dehiscing longitudinally or sometimes apically; ovary inferior, 1 to many-celled, with 1 to many ovules in each cell; placentation axile, rarely parietal; styles terminal, sometimes lateral; stigma undivided. Fruit a berry or loculicidal capsule, rarely drupaceous or nutlike; seeds few or many, embryo variously shaped, endosperm scanty or none.

Flowers small, in axillary racemes, sometimes forming terminal leafy panicles, occasionally polygamous; calyx-tube campanulate, lobes 4 or 5, spreading; stamens numerous, in several series, free, filaments filiform, anthers small. versatile, with parallel cells; ovary 4- or 5-celled, the cells often divided by false partitions; ovules very few in each cell; style filiform, stigma peltate. Berry globular, crowned with calyx-lobes. Seeds few, reniform; seed-coats hard; embryo hippocrepiform or circular, with a long radicle and short linear cotyledons.
