Shrubs, usually dioecious, usually scandent, rarely erect. Leaves alternate, distichous or subverticillate. Inflorescences racemose, paniculate, or subumbellate, bracteate. Flowers unisexual or bisexual; sepals free or shortly united at base; petals free or united at base; stamens usually adnate to base of petals, rarely free, filaments free, elongate, anthers ovoid or oblong, dehiscent longitudinally; ovary globose or ovoid, much reduced in staminate Flowers, style elongate, stigma discoid or capitate; ovules few, uniseriate. Fruit a drupe, globose, 1-seeded; seed with ruminate endosperm.
About 140 species in the Pacific Islands, the East Indies, Australia, SE Asia and Africa, three species in Taiwan.
