Shrubs or rarely trees. Leaves alternate or rarely opposite, simple, estipulate, usually with resinous glands. Flowers axillary, solitary or fascicled, bisexual, regular or more usually irregular. Calyx 5-lobed or 5-fid, imbricate or not. Corolla gamopetalous, usually 5-lobed, lobes imbricate. Stamens usually 4, rarely 5, inserted on corolla tube and alternate with lobes, anthers 2-celled, cells often divergent and confluent at apex, dehiscing longitudinally. Ovary superior, 2-celled, cells 2-more-ovuled; style simple, terminal; ovules pendulous. Fruit a drupe. Seeds with very scanty or no endosperm; embryo straight or slightly curved.

A family of three genera and about 100 species. Eastern Asia to the Pacific islands and Australia, tropical America and Mauritius; one genus native to Taiwan.
