Robust perennial herbs, monoecious or polygramous. Rhizome subterranean. Pseudostem erect, formed by tightly clasping, overlapping, by elongate leaf sheaths. Leaves spirally arranged, crowded, oblong to oblanceolate, pinnatinerved with many close-set parallel lateral nerves, herbaceous to coriaceous, margins often wavy. Inflorescence a raceme, terminal, erect or pendulous; flowers many, female and bisexual ones always in lowermost clusters, male flowers above; perianth lobes 2 seriate; outer 3 more or less highly connate or cohering into a unilaterally split tube; 2 anterior lobes of inner row sometimes absent, mostly connate or cohering with the outer ones into a 5-lobed or 5-partite synpetalum; posterior lobe of inner row free; stamens mostly 5, free; anthers basifixed, linear, 2-celled; cells longitudinally dehiscent; staminode 1 or none; ovary inferior, 3-celled; ovules numerous per cell; style filiform from a thickened base; stigma thickened or flattened. Fruit a fleshy berry; seeds numerous, sterile in forms cultivated for edible fruit, embeded in pulp, variable in shape, with a sunken hilum and a hard testa; endosperm mealy.
