型態特徵
Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves simple, entire, alternate or whorled, mostly exstipulate. Inflorescences mostly terminal cymes, rarely axillary cymes or solitary. Flowers actino-morphic, bisexual, or rarely unisexual, hypogynous, or rarely perigynous; sepals usually 5, free or rarely connate at base; petals usually 5 and free, or somtimes connate below into a tube; stamens (2-)4-10(-many), usually alternisepalous, or alterni- and episepalous if more than 5, filaments usually connate at base; anthers introrse, tetrasporangiate, dehiscing by longitudinal slits; ovary syncarpous, (1-)2-5(-10)-carpellate, placentation axile. Fruit usually a loculicidally dehiscent capsule; seeds with starchy perisperm, endosperm absent or scanty.

About 13 genera, with about 120 species, mainly in the tropics and subtropics of both hemispheres; two genera and four species in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Glabrous annual herbs. Leaves linear to spatulate, mostly in false whorls on the stem, and in rosettes at base. Inforescence a terminal or leaf-opposed cyme, with racemiform ultimate branches, or an axillary umbellate-cluster of 2-5 short-pedicellate flowers. Sepals 5, often whitish or greenish within; petals none; stamens 3(-10); carpels 3-5, styles 3, very short. Capsules 3-valved; seeds with distinct hilar pegs, but without filiform appendages and caruncles.
