型態特徵
Herbs, shrubs or trees, erect, climbing or epiphytic; branches terete or tetragonous. Leaves opposite, rarely verticillate, simple, usually with 3–9 palmate veins, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, sometimes slightly zygomorphic as to androecium, mostly 4–5-merous, solitary or in simple or compound cymes. Calyx tubular, free or adnate to the ovary; lobes imbricate or valvate. Petals imbricate, free, rarely connate at the base. Stamens usually as many as or twice as many as the petals, equal or unequal; filaments distinct, often bent and inflexed; anthers typically 2-celled, introrse, basifixed, dehiscing by a single (rarely 2) pore rarely by 2 longitudinal slits, the connectives often thickened at the base and produced, sometimes vanously appendaged. Ovary mostly inferior, 4–5-celled, the placentas axile, rarely parietal or basal, the ovules numerous; style and stigma simple. Fruit a loculicidally dehiscent capsule or a berry. Seeds often minute; embryo straight or conforming to the shape of seed when large; endosperm absent.

Shrubs, erect or scandent; branches terete or subterete, glabrous or densely hirsute. Leaves opposite, ovate-attenuate or rounded or cordate, glabrous or pubescent. Flowers cymose paniculate or few or rarely solitary; calyx-tube funnel-shaped, adentate or lobed at the apex; petals 4, broad; stamens 8, unequal, the anthers elongated, with a pore at the top, the connectives produced below into two tubercles in front, sometimes short!y spurred at the back; ovary 4-celled, adnate to the calyx-tube and a ring-shaped glandular disc on the upper portion; style filiform; stigma usually disc-like. Capsule obconical-ovoid, loculicidally ovalved; seeds numerous, straight.
