Herbs, shrubs or trees, erect, climbing or epiphytic; branches terete or tetragonous. Leaves opposite, rarely verticillate, simple, usually with 3–9 palmate veins, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, sometimes slightly zygomorphic as to androecium, mostly 4–5-merous, solitary or in simple or compound cymes. Calyx tubular, free or adnate to the ovary; lobes imbricate or valvate. Petals imbricate, free, rarely connate at the base. Stamens usually as many as or twice as many as the petals, equal or unequal; filaments distinct, often bent and inflexed; anthers typically 2-celled, introrse, basifixed, dehiscing by a single (rarely 2) pore rarely by 2 longitudinal slits, the connectives often thickened at the base and produced, sometimes vanously appendaged. Ovary mostly inferior, 4–5-celled, the placentas axile, rarely parietal or basal, the ovules numerous; style and stigma simple. Fruit a loculicidally dehiscent capsule or a berry. Seeds often minute; embryo straight or conforming to the shape of seed when large; endosperm absent.
