型態特徵
Perennial herbs. Rhizome knotty or tuberous. Stems erect or decumbent-ascending, nodes severalnoded, branching, occasionally plants stemless. Leaves more or less 2-ranked, radical and cauline; blades broad or narrow, pinnately nerved, costa and fine parallel side veins prominent, narrowed to conspicuous petiole. Inflorescences spike-like or head-like clusters of rather small flowers, subtended by spathe-like bracts. Flowers solitary or few together, irregular and asymmetical; sepals 3, free, equal or subequal; petals 3, unequal, usually connate forming a tube toward base, upper petal large than lower two; staminodes 5 or 6, 1 bearing a 1-celled anther, petaloid and constituting the showy part of the flower, rarely outer staminodes wanting; style 1, adnate below to tubular portion of staminodia; ovary inferior. Fruit a capsule or berry.

Plants occasionally more or less shrub-like. Stems copiously branched, stout, erect. Leaf blade broad, short petiolate, sheathing at base elongated. Inflorescence racemose or paniculate with several elongated spikes. Flowers solitary or paired, subtended by a bracteole and surrounded by a sheath-like bract; sepals, free; corolla tube, 3-lobed; staminodia forming a long tube, outer staminodia petaloid, cucullate inner staminode hardly appendiculate, fleshy inner one short. Ovary 3-loculed; ovule 1 per locule, Fruit a capsule, a dehiscent or indehiscent.
