型態特徵
Trees, shrubs or herbs, sometimes scandent. Leaves opposite, simple, with or without stipules. Inflorescences cymose, terminal or axillary, simple or compound, cymes sometimes reduced to solitary flowers. Flowers regular, calyx 4 or 5-toothed; corolla 4 or 5-lobed, with short to long tube; stamens 4 or 5, inserted on corolla tube and alternating with lobes, anthers 2-celled; ovary free, 2-celled; style simple, stigma capitate or bifid; ovules one or more in each cell, placentation axile. Fruit a septicidal capsule or indehiscent berry, 1- to many-seeded; seeds with abundant endosperm.
屬
A tropical and subtropical family with about 29 genera and nearly 500 species. Six genera in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Trees or scandent shrubs. Leaves opposite, 3–5 nerved, with short clavate tendrils in some axils of scandent species. Flowers in terminal or axillary cymes; calyx 4- or 5-lobed; corolla tube of various lengths, lobes 4 or 5, valvate; stamens 5; ovary 2-celled, styles long, short or nearly lacking, stigmas capitate or slightly 2-lobed; ovules many in each cell. Fruit a globose or oblong berry, 1-, 2- or usually many-seeded; seeds globose, discoid or oblong, endosperm horny.
