Inermous trees or erect shrubs, without milky latex. Leaves simple, spirally arranged, strongly approximated towards spices of branches, occasionally partly (sub)opposite, pinnately nerved, without gland-dots; stipules none, or minute, caducous. Flowers terminal or axillary, solitary, clustered, in racemes or panicles, bisexual, actinomorphic or zygomorphic; bracteoles or bracts 2 or more; perianth perigynous or epigynous, on mostly flat disk; calyx adnate to ovary, calyx-tube produced above ovary or not, limb 4–6-lobed, or closed before anthesis, afterwards 2–4-cleft, valvate or subimbricate; petals mostly 4–6, rarely absent, imbricate, free or shortly connate, often basally cohering with base of staminal tube; stamens many, in several rows, mostly basally united into short tube; rarely free, inserted on disk or partly on disk-lobe, those of inner row(s) small, anantherous, outer ones staminodial or not; anthers basifixed or dorsifixed, longitudinally dehiscent, rarely poricidal; disk equal or unequal-sided, mostly flat, bearing the adnate petals and the stamens, intrastaminal disk sometimes present; ovary inferior or half-inferior, 2–6 (rarely more)-celled' cells with 1 to many ovules; placentation axile; styles entire or rarely bifurcate; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit diverse, either baccate, drupaceous or capsule-like, indehiscent or operculate, sometimes wimged, with entirely or partly woody, fibrous or fleshy pericarp. Seeds 1 to many, alate or wingless, exarillate, sometimes embedded in pulpy mass from decayed fruit-septa and placentation; endosperm none; embryo straight or curved.

About 18 genera, native to South America, certain Pacific islands, South West Asia and western Africa; only one genus in Taiwan.

Flowers in erect or pendulous racemes or spikes, terminal or lateral; bracts and bracteoles small, soon caducous; calyx-tube not produced above ovary, limb consisting of 3–5 free lobes, or entirely closed before anthesis, afterwards 2–4-lobed, persistent; petals 4, rarely 5–6, basally adhering to staminal tube; stamens tubular at base, inner ones small, anantherous; ovary 2–4-celled; ovules 2–8 in each cell, pendulous from apex of inner angle. Fruit with fleshy-fibrous exocarp and woody-fibrous endocarp. Seed 1, no cotyledons, hypocotyl thick, erect.
