型態特徵
Deciduous, monoecious trees (in Taiwan). Leaves alternate, pinnate, estipulate. Staminate inflore-scences solitary catkins or clusters of 3 or more catkins; staminate flowers in axil of a bract, with or without 2 bracteoles; perianth 0 or of 3-6 scales on the margins of bracts, epigynous; stamens 3-40, on bracts, filaments short, anthers basifixed, 2-locular, dehiscing longitudinally. Pistillate inflorescences many-flowered catkins or 2- several-flowered spikes; pistillate flowers bracteate; perianth 4-parted or none, fused with ovary; ovary bicarpellate, rarely of 3 or 4 carpels, inferior, 1-locular, style 2-bifid, stigmatic branches 2-4; ovule 1, erect, orthotropous. Fruit a nut or a drupe or a 2-, 3- or circular-winged samara; seeds basifixed, solitary, without endosperm, cotyledons 4-lobed, often fleshy.

Genera nine, species about 60, primarily temperate and subtropical regions of northern hemisphere; three genera in Taiwan.
