Evergreen or deciduous small trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, petiolate, glabrous, glandular-dentate or crenate, estipulate. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary raceme or panicle. Flowers white, small; calyx-tube adnate to the base of the ovary, with 5 persistent lobes; petals 5, perigynous, oblong, valvate in bud; stamens 5, perigynous, with filiform-subulate filaments; ovary 2-celled; styles short, the stigma capitate; ovules few to numerous. Capsule oblong to conical, crowned with the persistent calyx-teeth, few to many-seeded; seeds elongate, the testa loose or less produced at both ends.
