Evergreen shrubs or trees, glabrous, usually aromatic. Bud-scales conspicuous, imbricate. Leaves alternate, subopposite, pseudowhorled or clustered at apes of branches, costa generally impressed above; estipulate. Flowers bisexual, solitary or fascicled, axillary, supra-axillary or subterminal, sometimes ramiflorous or cauliforous, bracteate; pedicellate. Perianth segments 7-55, free, red, purple, yellow or white, imbricate, usually several-seriate, elliptic, oblong, ligulate or lanceolate, flat and thin-carnose or orbicular to ovate, concave and carnose. Stamens 4-50, free, 1 to several-seriate; filaments ligulate to subterete; anthers basifixed, 2-celled. Carpels 5-21, free, in a single whorl (rarely 2-whorls); stigma subulate and persistent; without style; ovary ovoid or ellipsoid, laterally flattened, unilocular, with single, near-basal, anatropous ovule. Fruit of spreading compressed follicles; follicles 2-20, free, in a single whorl, oblong to ovoid, subwoody, base broad, apex rostrate, dehiscing ventrally. Seed 1 in each follicle, yellowish to brownish, ovoid or ellipsoid, laterally flattened, smooth, glossy, brittle; embryo minute; endosperm copious, oily.
