Trees and shrubs, often climbing. Leaves usually alternate, simple, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, rarely unisexual by abortion, actinomorphic, usually in panicles. Calyx 4–5-lobed, small. Petals 4–5, usually distinct or sometimes connate, valvate. Stamens as many as petals and alternate with them, distinct, the anthers 2-celled, usually introrse, sometimes 4-lobed, dehiscing longitudinally. Pistil 1, the ovary superior, 1-loculed, mostly 3- or 5-carpellate, the placentation apical; ovules 2, usually pendulous from locule apex, anatropous; style 1, the stigmas usually 3. Fruit usually a drupe, rarely a samara. Seed with straight or curved embryo; endosperm present.
