型態特徵
Annual or perennial herbs, rarely subshrubs, usually hairy. Leaves mostly alternate, rarely opposite, entire to pinnately lobed, estipulate. Inflorescences one-sided cymes or false racemes, coiled from apex when young. Flowers bisexual, regular, 5-merous, bractless, mostly bluish or white.Calyx usually 5-cleft to base, imbricate. Corolla sympetalous, rotate to campanulate, usually 5-cleft, lobes usually imbricate. Stamens 5, adnate to short corolla-tube, filaments equal or unequal, anthers unequal, versatile. Disc present or absent. Ovary superior, 2-celled; placentae 2, parietal, 4-many-ovuled; style 1 and bifid or 2, stigma capitate. Fruit a capsule, 2–4-valved or dehiscing irregularly, 4-many-seeded. Seeds striate or pitted, with endosperm.

A family of about 18 genera, mostly in North America, a few species in Asia and Africa; one genus with one species in Taiwan.

Flowers blue, regular, clustered, generally in cymes or short racemes; calyx 5-partite, cleft nearly to base, lobes lanceolate; corolla broadly campanulate or nearly rotate, 5-cleft above, the lobes imbricate; stamens inserted corolla throat and alternate with lobes, filaments equal or unequal; anthers versatile, 2-celled, dehiscing introrsely by longitudinal slits; scale-like appendages often present at base of or alternating with stamens; ovary ovoid, 2-celled, many-ovuled; styles 2, free, stigma capitate. Capsules globose, thin-walled, 2–4-valved or bursting irregularly; seeds numerous, minute, striate-ribbed, with fleshy endosperm.
