Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs, with or without spines in leaf axils, often glandular-hairy. Leaves alternate, entire. Flowers blue, regular, clustered, generally in cymes or short racemes; calyx 5-partite, cleft nearly to base, lobes lanceolate; corolla broadly campanulate or nearly rotate, 5-cleft above, the lobes imbricate; stamens inserted corolla throat and alternate with lobes, filaments equal or unequal; anthers versatile, 2-celled, dehiscing introrsely by longitudinal slits; scale-like appendages often present at base of or alternating with stamens; ovary ovoid, 2-celled, many-ovuled; styles 2, free, stigma capitate. Capsules globose, thin-walled, 2–4-valved or bursting irregularly; seeds numerous, minute, striate-ribbed, with fleshy endosperm.
