Trees, shrubs, or woody vines. Leaves alternate, petiolate, simple or trifolioate, estipulate. Flowers epigynous, somewhat regular, bisexual or unisexual, in thyrsoid or dischasial inflorescences; tepals in 2 series of 3-8, valvate; stamens in 1 series of 3-5, filaments with 2 glands or staminodes at base, anthers introrse, 2-locular, dehiscing by valves; ovary inferior, with 1 carpel; ovule solitary, pendulous. Fruit 1-seeded, often with lateral or apical wings; seeds without endosperm.

Scandent shrubs. Leaves alternate, petiolate, 3-foliolate, leaflets petiolulate. Inflorescences axillary, loosely cymose; flowers bisexual; calyx tube short, 5-lobed, lobes spreading, deciduous, valvate; petals 5, valvate; stamens 5, filaments 2-glandular at base, anthers dehiscing longitudinally; ovary 1-locular; ovule 1, pendulous from apex of locule. Fruit 2-4-winged, indehiscent; seed 1; cotyledons planoconvex to unequal.
About 20 species from W. Africa to Madagascar, and from southern China through Malesia to western New Guinea. One species in Taiwan.
