Trees, shrubs, or woody vines. Leaves alternate, petiolate, simple or trifolioate, estipulate. Flowers epigynous, somewhat regular, bisexual or unisexual, in thyrsoid or dischasial inflorescences; tepals in 2 series of 3-8, valvate; stamens in 1 series of 3-5, filaments with 2 glands or staminodes at base, anthers introrse, 2-locular, dehiscing by valves; ovary inferior, with 1 carpel; ovule solitary, pendulous. Fruit 1-seeded, often with lateral or apical wings; seeds without endosperm.

型態特徵
Evergreen monoecious trees or shrubs. Leaves simple, entire, long-petiolate. Inflorescences thyrses with long peduncles and 3-flowered cymes with 2 lateral staminate and 1 central pistillate flowers. Staminate flowers with 6-8 tepals in 2 series, subvalvate, short-pedicellate; stamens as many as and opposite the tepals, filaments 1-2-glandular or eglandular, the anthers dehiscing laterally. Pistillate flowers with 8-10 tepals in 2 series, subvalvate; ovary inferior, enclosed in a thin cupule, style short, stigma dilated; staminodes 4 or 5. Fruit a drupe, enclosed by the enlarged cupule; seeds globose or ovoid, ribbed; embryo thick, lobed and ruminate.
