型態特徵
Herbs. Leaves opposite or verticillate. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, solitary or in spikes or panicles; calyx-tube adnate to the ovary, the lobes 2–4; stamens 2–8, the anthers basifixed, longitudinally split; ovary inferior, 1–4-locular; styles 2–4; ovules pendulous. Fruit a nut or drupaceous; seeds with endosperm.

About seven genera, 100 species in the Tropics and temperate regions; two genera and three species in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Soft aquatic herbs. Leaves verticillate, sessile, bipinnatifid. Flowers axillary, 3–4-fascicled or in terminal spikes, the staminate uppermost, the pistillate below; calyx-tube of staminate flowers very short, the lobes 2–4; petals minute or absent; ovary 2–4-locular; style 4; ovules solitary in each locule. Drupe 4-grooved, nut-like.
