型態特徵
Herbs. Leaves opposite or verticillate. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, solitary or in spikes or panicles; calyx-tube adnate to the ovary, the lobes 2–4; stamens 2–8, the anthers basifixed, longitudinally split; ovary inferior, 1–4-locular; styles 2–4; ovules pendulous. Fruit a nut or drupaceous; seeds with endosperm.

About seven genera, 100 species in the Tropics and temperate regions; two genera and three species in Taiwan.

Glabrous perennial herbs. Leaves small, opposite, coriaceous, serrate; bracteoles 2; flowers small, in terminal panicles, subsessile, unisexual or bisexual; sepals 4; petals 4, valvate; stamens 8; ovary 2–4-locular; styles 2–4, the stigmatic branches pinnatifid; ovules solitary in each locule. Fruit a drupe, longitudinally striate.
