型態特徵
Trees, shrubs or herbs with various glandular secretions. Leaves simple, entire, opposite and exstipulate. Inflorescences various. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, regular. Sepals (2-)4-5(-6), imbricate or decussate, the inner ones sometimes petaloid. Petals 4-5(-10), free, imbricate or contorted in bud. Stamens indefinite, free or in 4-5(-10) free or variously united fascicles, often with the antisepalous fascicles sterile or absent. Ovary superior, 1-12-locular, with axile or parietal or basal placentation; ovules 1 to many; styles 1-5 or absent, the stigmas 1-12. Fruit a capsule, berry or drupe. Seeds 1 to many, without endosperm; embryo various; aril present or not.

A family of 40 genera and about 900 species, chiefly tropical and subtropical but with two genera (Hypericum and Triadenum) in temperate regions; four genera and 20 species in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Perennial herbs, glabrous, with translucent ('pale') and occasionally opaque black ('dark') glands. Leaves opposite, entire. Inflorescence of terminal and axillary cymes. Flowers bisexual. Sepals 5, quincuncial. Petals 5, pink to flesh-colored or white, imbricate, ± equilateral, deciduous. Stamens in 3 (i. e., 2+2+1) fascicles, 1 antepetalous and 2 antesepalous, persistent, each fascicle with 3 stamens, with filaments ± slender, ca. 1/3-2/3 united; anthers versatile, dehiscing longitudinally, with gland on connective; staminodes absent; sterile fascicles 3, alternating with fertile ones, entire, fleshy. Ovary 3-locular with axile placentae, each placenta with many ovules; styles 3, free, slender; stigmas ± capitate. Fruit a septicidal capsule, valves with resin-containing vittae; seeds small, carinate but not winged, with testa reticulate-pitted, not arillate; embryo slender, straight, with distinct cotyledons.
