Shrubs, spiny or unarmed, the spines infra-axillary. Leaves sparse, often fasciculate, the stipules adnate to the petiole or absent. Flowers often unisexual by abortion, subsolitary or racemose, the pedicels bracteate at base and 2-bracteolate at the middle; calyx-tube adnate to the ovary, the lobes 4–5; petals 4–5, small, scale-like, epigynous; stamens 4–5, epigynous; ovary inferior, 1-celled; styles 2, free or connate, the stigma simple; ovules numerous, inserted on 2 parietal placentae. Fruit an oblong or globose berry, crowned with calyx, few-seeded.
