型態特徵
Perennial herbs or small shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate to spirally arranged, sometimes with tufts of hairs in leaf axils, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, usually irregular, solitary or in cymes. Calyx tubular, adnate to ovary, 5-lobed. Corolla gamopetalous, usually 5-lobed, bilabiate or 1-lipped, valvate or induplicate. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, anthers introrse, 2-celled, dehiscing longitudinally, free or connivent around style. Ovary superior, inferior or half-inferior, 2-carpellate, ovules 1 or 2 or many, anatropous, ascending, placentation basal or axile, style 1, filiform, stigma simple or 2 or 3-branched, surrounded by subtending pollen-collecting cup. Fruit a drupe. Seeds with a straight embryo and fleshy endosperm.

Ten to 11 genera with about 400 species, in the tropics, mainly in Australia and New Guinea.

型態特徵
Shrubs, glabrous or variously hairy. Leaves spirally arranged, entire, rarely sinuate or dentate. Inflorescence axillary, sessile or subsessile, calyx tube adnate to ovary; corolla irregular, 1-lipped, 5-lobed, valvate; anthers 2-celled, basifixed, dehiscent longitudinally; ovary inferior to subinferior, 1–2-celled, each cell with one axillary ovule, stigma usually 2-lobed. Fruit a drupe, more or less fleshy, with a hard stone containing 1 or 2 seeds.
