型態特徵

Mostly herbs, rarely small trees. Leaves alternate, rarely opposite, simple or compound; stipules often paired. Flowers one to many, bisexual, actimorphic; calyx persistent, 4–5 ; petals 4–5; stamens 10 or more, the filaments more or less connate at base, the anthers versatile; carpels 5, with a long beak at the apex; ovules 1–2 in each locule, pendulous. Fruit usually a capsule, 3–5 lobed, each lobe dehiscing suddenly and spirally coiled.

A family of 11 genera and about 650 species, widely distributed over the temperate and subtropical regions. One genus in Taiwan.

Herbs. Leaves ternately or palmately divided or 3–5 lobed, long-petiolate. Flowers 1–2, axillary or subterminal, actinomorphic, reddish-purple or yellow, long pedunculate; sepals 5, elliptic, with 5 nerves, caudate at apex, pilose; petals 5, alternate with nectary glands; stamens 10, perfect, 2 whorled; ovary 5-lobed, the ovules 2 in each locule. Seeds solitary in each carpel, the endosperm scanty or absent.
