型態特徵

Evergreen trees or shrubs; bark grayish-brown; buds with few foliaceous scales. Leaves spirally arranged, entire, wavy, serrate or dentate, coriaceous or membranaceous, petiolate. Inflorescence catkins or spikes, somewhat erect and spreading, terminal or axillary; flowers monoecious. Staminate flowers sessile or nearly so; perianth 4–6-lobed, lobes imbricate, puberulent outside, glabrous or nearly so inside; stamens usually 8–12; reduced ovary with long whitish hairs. Pistillate flowers solitary or 3(2–5) in clusters, either subtending the staminate catkin or borne separately, short-pedicelled, usually enclosed within an urceolate involucre; perianth 4–6-lobed, urceolate; ovary 3(1–5)-celled, styles 3 (2–5), cylindric, stigmas pointed. Nuts always solitary, sometimes wholly enclosed by the cupule, with a thin or thick pericarp, scales of involucre distinct and imbricate or united into concentric rings; cupules cup-like, scutellate.

About 100 species in eastern and southern Asia, only one in western North America, 13 in Taiwan.
