Shrubs or small trees deciduous or evergreen, somtimes spiny, covered with silvery or brownish peltate scales. Leaves alternate, petiolate, entire, estipulate. Inflorescence fasciculate or racemose or umbellate-racemose, or a solitary flower. Flowers regular, bisexual; perianth united at lower part, the tube campanulate or cupulate or funnel-like, 4-lobed, the lobes deciduous, white or yellow inside; stamens 4, the filaments short, inserted near the mouth of perianth-tube, alternate with the lobes; ovary 1-locular, 1-ovulate, the style linear, the stigma lateral. Fruit indehiscent, globose to elliptic. Seeds usually ribbed, with a large straight embryo.
Species around 40 in southern Europe, Asia and North America.
