型態特徵
Evergreen shrubs or perennial herbs. Leaves simple, alternate, petiolate. Flowers bisexual, regular, hypogynous, solitary, or in racemes, or sometimes heads; calyx infundibuliform-campanulate, 5-lobed, lobes imbricate, persistent; stamens 5, inserted on corolla and alternate, opposite or hypogynous, free or basally connate in a ring; staminodes, if present, scale-like or spatulate, opposite lobes; anthers 1- or 2-celled, dehiscing longitudinally or transversely; ovary subglobose, 3-locular; axile placentation; ovules few to many, anatropous or amphitropous; style solitary, stigma 3-lobed. Capsules 3-valved, loculicidally dehiscing. Seeds small, cylindrical, with copious endosperm.

A family of six genera, most species are confined to North America and eastern Asia, one genus in Taiwan.
