型態特徵
Evergreen shrubs or perennial herbs. Leaves simple, alternate, petiolate. Flowers bisexual, regular, hypogynous, solitary, or in racemes, or sometimes heads; calyx infundibuliform-campanulate, 5-lobed, lobes imbricate, persistent; stamens 5, inserted on corolla and alternate, opposite or hypogynous, free or basally connate in a ring; staminodes, if present, scale-like or spatulate, opposite lobes; anthers 1- or 2-celled, dehiscing longitudinally or transversely; ovary subglobose, 3-locular; axile placentation; ovules few to many, anatropous or amphitropous; style solitary, stigma 3-lobed. Capsules 3-valved, loculicidally dehiscing. Seeds small, cylindrical, with copious endosperm.

A family of six genera, most species are confined to North America and eastern Asia, one genus in Taiwan.

Evergreen glabrous perennials with creeping branched stems. Leaves radical or rosulately arranged at end of stem, long-petiolate, orbicular to cordate, undulately toothed. Flowers solitary or racemes, erect, with bracts along pedicels; calyx 5-lobed, lobes ovate to oblong, persistent; corolla-lobes 5, cam-panulate to infundibuliform, obtusely toothed to laciniate, undulate to crenate; anthers dorsally attached, filaments short or none; staminodes, when present, linear to scale-like; ovary globose, 3-locular; style filiform; stigma obscurely 3-lobed; ovules numerous in each cell. Capsule globose, dehiscent, 3-lobed, surrounded by the persistent calyx. Seeds many, globose-ovoid, testa reticulate.
