Trees or climbing or erect shrubs. Leaves persistent or deciduous, alternate, estipulate, simple or imparipinnate, with 1 or more pairs of leaflets; leaflets subcoriaceous, always entire. Flowers small and inconspicuous, racemose or paniculate, usually hermaphroditic, regular or nearly so. Calyx 5-partite, persistent. Petals 5, ligulate and longer than the calyx, usually imbricate, free or slightly coherent. Stamens perigynous or hypogynous, 5 or more; filaments filiform, often monadelphous at base; anthers short, didymous, the dehiscence introrse. Disc 0 or thin, surrounded by the base of the stamens. Carpels usually 5, rarely 1–3, free, hairy, l-celled. Style subulate or filiform; stigma subcapitate, simple or 2-lobed. Ovules 2, collateral, ascending from the base of the inner angle of the cell, orthotropus. Capsules usually solitary, sessile or stipitate, follicular, dehiscing usually in front, 1- or rarely 2-seeded. Seeds erect, with or without an arillus, the embryo erect, albuminous or exalbuminous.

型態特徵
Woody vines, shrubs or small trees. Leaves odd-pinnate to unifoliolate. Inflorescence axillary or terminal, paniculate, with bracts and bracteoles. Flowers bisexual, 5-merous; sepals imbricate, ovate, acute, usually minutely pubescent without, accrescent in fruit, becoming hard or coriaceous; petals lanceolate, 2–3 times longer than sepals; stamens 10, confluent at base; pistils 5; ovary oblique-ovoid, the style slender, capitate. Fruit ovoid to ellipsoid, usually opening lengthwise by a ventral slit, with thin but hard or coriaceous pericarp. Seed 1, ellipsoid to subglobose, usually flattened; endosperm absent.
