型態特徵

Trees or shrubs, often climbing, sometimes spiny, without milky latex. Leaves mostly opposite or distichous, sometimes spirally arranged or verticillate, simple, exstipulate. Flowers in racemes or spikes, sometimes capitate, bracteolate at base, bisexual, rarely polygamo-monoecious; calyx-tube whether or not strongly produced beyond ovary; limb 4–5-fid, persistent or not; petals 4–5 or absent, often small, imbricate or valvate in bud; stamens 4–10, seated on calyx-limb or on the bottom of the calyx, 1-seriate if there are as many stamens as calyx-lobes, 2-seriate if there are more stamens; filaments subulate or filiform, incurved in bud; anthers dorsifixed, small, 2-celled, dehiscing longitudinally; ovary inferior, 1-celled; ovules 1–6, hanging from apex of the ovary-cell; style 1; stigma small, entire; disk present or not. Fruit dry, often angular or winged; pyrene 1-celled, 1-seeded. Seed without endosperm.

型態特徵

Tree. Leaves spirally arranged (then often crowded at apices of stems) or opposite, often with acarodomatia in nerve-axils below, not rarely pellucid-dotted or punctate, often bearing glands along the margins or on the petioles. Flowers axillary, in whether or not panicled spikes or spiciform racemes, bisexual or polygamo-monoecious, small, greenish white or white; receptacle constricted above the ovary; calyx-limb campanulate or cup-shaped, 5-lobed; corolla absent; disk pilose; stamens 10, the 5 lower ones opposite the calyx-lobes, alternating with the 5 longer, protruding upper ones; anthers 2-lobed; ovules 2, rarely 3. Fruit angular, compressed or longitudinally winged; pyrene hard or coriaceous; cotyledons convolute.
