Perennial herbs; rhizome creeping, horizontal, slender. Stem erect to ascending, simple or branched upward, usually covered with leafless sheaths at base, glabrous, greenish. Leaves alternate to subopposite, sometimes distichous, chartaceous to membranaceous, entire to slightly undulate, 3-many nerved. Flowers solitary to several, terminal, umbellate to subumbellate, pale yellow, yellow, red or purplish red, sometimes white; pedicels glabrous, not articulate; perianth tubular to campanulate; segments 6, free, subequal, saccate or calcarate at base, caducous after anthesis; stamens 6, hypogynous; filaments slender or slightly flattened, longer than anthers; anthers dorsifixed; ovary superior, 3-celled, ovules 2 in each cell; style slender, 3-fid or unlobed at apex; stigmas 3-fid or entire. Fruit a berry, globose to ovoid; seeds 1-3, globose to oblong, testa lustrous. Basic chromosome number X=6, 8, 9, 11.
