型態特徵
Perennials. Rhizome tuberous or sometimes short decumbent, nodose. Stems erect, simple or branched. Leaves basal, cauline; blades broad, sheathing at base, pinnately nerved, costa, and fine oblique parallel lateral nerves prominent. Inflorescence terminal, spicate, racemose or sometimes more or less paniculate. Flowers showy, irregular, and asymmetric; sepals 3, small, more or less scale-like; petals 3, mostly lanceolate, inconspicuous; staminodia showy, petaloid, mostly 5 in cultivated plants, 4 of them narrowly spathe-like; ovary inferior, 3-locular, ovules many in each locule. Fruit a capsule, 3-valved.

About 25 species, in tropical and warm temperate regions of the Americas. Some species are cultivated and naturalized in the warmer regions of the Old World. One species naturalized in Taiwan.
