Aquatic perennial herbs; rhizomes slender, elongate, branching, with gelatinous sheath. Leaves simple, alternate, petiolate, submersed or floating, dimorphic, floating blades elliptic, peltate, margings entire, submersed blades finely palmately dissected. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, typically emergent, solitary, axillary, pedunculate; sepals 3, petaloid; petals 3; stamens 3-many; carpels 2–18, apocarpous, 1-locular, stigma nearly sessile; ovules 2–3, parietal, anatropous. Fruit aggregate with leathery pericarp, indehiscent, 1–3-seeded; seeds with endosperm.
