型態特徵
Evergreen shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite or alternate, estipulate. Flowers monoecious, small, apetalous; sepals 4 or wanting, or 4–12 (in pistillate flowers); stamens 4 or numerous, opposite to the sepals, the anthers basifixed; ovary supperior, mostly 3 locular; ovules mostly 2, rarely 1, pendulous. Fruit a dehiscent capsule or slightly fleshy. Seed albuminous.
屬
Six genera, mostly in tropical and subtropical regions, few in temperate areas. Three genera with five taxa in Taiwan.

Procumbent herbs or subshrubs; branches ascending, leafy above. Leaves alternate or clustered at ends of branches, peti¬oled, usually coarsely toothed, 3 veined. Inflorescence spicate, terminal or axillary, the staminate flowers above, the pistillate flowers below; sepals usually 4 , imbricate; stamens 4, opposite the sepals, the filaments thick and free; ovary usually 3 locular, the ovules 2 in each locule, the styles 2–3, spreading. Fruit a dehiscent capsule.
