型態特徵
Evergreen shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite or alternate, estipulate. Flowers monoecious, small, apetalous; sepals 4 or wanting, or 4–12 (in pistillate flowers); stamens 4 or numerous, opposite to the sepals, the anthers basifixed; ovary supperior, mostly 3 locular; ovules mostly 2, rarely 1, pendulous. Fruit a dehiscent capsule or slightly fleshy. Seed albuminous.
屬
Six genera, mostly in tropical and subtropical regions, few in temperate areas. Three genera with five taxa in Taiwan.

Staminate flowers lateral in inflores¬cence; sepals 4, imbricate. Pistillate flowers terminal in inflorescnce; sepals 6, imbricate; ovary 3 locular, the ovules 2 in each locule, the styles 3, short. Fruit a dehiscent capsule. Seeds black.
