型態特徵
Annual or perennial, saprophytic or autotrophic herbs. Leaves usually spread or alternate, simple, without stipules, cauline leaves mostly reduced to scales, sometimes well developed and crowded at base of stem. Flowers solitary or in capitate or cymose inflorescence, hermaphrodite, usually actinomorphic. Perianth consisting of 2 whorls. Stamens 3 or 6, each with a connective. Ovary inferior, 1-celled with parietal placentation or 3-celled with axile placentation. Ovules numerous, anatropous, with 2 integuments. Fruit usually capsular, sometimes fleshy, crowned by persistent perianth-tube and style, or by a basal perianth-tube, dehiscing irregularly or with transverse slits at top. Seeds numerous, with endosperm.

The family consists of 16 genera ca. 160 species. Widespread except Europe, mostly tropical, north to Japan and E. USA, south to New Zealand. Two genus in Taiwan.
