型態特徵
Caudex erect, sometimes a small tree-like trunk, or rhizome creeping or scandent. Fronds monomorphic or dimorphic, usually pinnate or pinnatifid, rarely simple or bipinnate; stipes scaly at base, not articulate to rhizome; venation usually free, or with a costal row of areolae. Sori costal, discrete or in a coenosori; usually with an indusium opening towards costa, rarely exindusiate. Spore bilaterale. Adult gametophytes cordate.

型態特徵
Terrestrial ferns, often large; caudex usually short, erect, scaly; stipes tufted; or rhizome creeping and stipes distant (Chieniopteris). Fronds usually deeply bipinnatifid; pinnatifid in some species (Chieniopteris); usually monomorphic (except in Lorinseria); veins forming a single row of costal and costular areolae, other veins free or anastomosing (especially in Lorinseria & Chieniopteris). Sori costal, linear, discrete, superfical or sunken in cavities, parallel to costa or costule.
The genus Chieniopteris is probably distinct from Woodwardia even though we are treating it as a section of Woodwardia. It differs in having a creeping rhizome, distant fronds, anastomosing venation, type of scales at base of stipe, as well as form of frond.
About 12 species, five in Taiwan.
