型態特徵
Perennial herbaceous vines with rhizomes or tubers; entire plants fleshy, mucilaginous, glabrous or glabrescent. Leaves alternate or subopposite, sessile or petiolate, simple, entire, exstipulate. Inforescences axillary or terminal spikes, racemes, or panicles; pedicels with two bracteoles subtending the flowers. Flowers bisexual, rarely functionally unisexual, actinomorphic; perianth biseriate; outer perianth (considered as sepals by some authors and as bracteoles by others) 2, colored, free or partly connate; inner perianth (considered as sepals by some authors and as petals by others) 5, connate half way; stamens 5, on outer perianth tube; nectary annular; ovary superior, 3-carpellate, unilocular with one basal ovule. Fruit a utricle, surrounded by the often fleshy perianth and sometimes also by the accrescent bracteoles; seeds without endosperms.

Four genera with about 20 species center in tropical America; two genera with two species naturalized in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs, often with tuberous roots. Stems somtimes scapose. Leaves spirally arranged or sometimes lower leaves opposite, exstipulate. Inflorescences teminal cymes or corymboid thyrses, rarely axillary. Sepals 2, caducous; petals mostly 5; stamens 5-many; ovary superior, styles mostly 3-lobed at apex. Capsule 3-valved at base when young, 3 valved or irregularly dehiscent.
