型態特徵
Perennial herbaceous vines with rhizomes or tubers; entire plants fleshy, mucilaginous, glabrous or glabrescent. Leaves alternate or subopposite, sessile or petiolate, simple, entire, exstipulate. Inforescences axillary or terminal spikes, racemes, or panicles; pedicels with two bracteoles subtending the flowers. Flowers bisexual, rarely functionally unisexual, actinomorphic; perianth biseriate; outer perianth (considered as sepals by some authors and as bracteoles by others) 2, colored, free or partly connate; inner perianth (considered as sepals by some authors and as petals by others) 5, connate half way; stamens 5, on outer perianth tube; nectary annular; ovary superior, 3-carpellate, unilocular with one basal ovule. Fruit a utricle, surrounded by the often fleshy perianth and sometimes also by the accrescent bracteoles; seeds without endosperms.

Four genera with about 20 species center in tropical America; two genera with two species naturalized in Taiwan.

Flowers bisexual or functionally unisexual, sweetly scented; outer perianth more or less keeled; inner perianth lobed nearly to base; stamens 5, free or short connate at base; style 1. Fruit partly or completely enclosed by the persistent dried perianth.
