型態特徵
Nearly all terrestrial ferns; rhizome usually short and stout, sometimes creeping and slender; scales thin, light brown to dark brown, lanceolate or ovate. Stipes with 2 vascular strands at base and uniting into a single U-shaped strand above; lamina usually thin, pinnate to decompound, rarely simple; veins usually free, goniopteroid in one genus, and forming areolae in two other genera; some species bearing multicellular septae hairs, usually glabrous; rachis groove generally open to receive rachilla grooves but not in all genera. Sori linear, single or double. J-shaped, sub-reniform or round; indusia usually present, sometimes small and fugacious, in Woodsia borne below the sporangia.

型態特徵
Small ferns, terrestrial or growing in crevices of rocks; caudex short, erect, dictyostelic; often covered with a mass of persistent stipe bases. Stipes tufted, scaly at least at base, usually articulated at some distance above the base of stipe; c. s. of basal part of stipe with 2 bundles, the upper stipe with a single U-shaped bundle; laminae narrowly lanceolate, pinnate to bipinnate, pubescent of glabrescent, often scaly; venation free. Sori round, subterminal or dorsal on veins; indusia basal globose, cup-like or irregularly cleft into small segments, sometimes consisting of a tuft of multicellular hairs.
