Perennial, evergreen herbs with fleshy corm and stout caudex, sometimes stoloniferous. Leaves simple, ovate, peltate, base usually cordate, apex acute, petiole sheathing below. Inflorescences at or near apex of stem; spathe constricted; flowers unisexual; female, ovary 1-celled; ovules many, placentas 2-4 parietal, longitudinal, biseriate; stigma depressed globose, shallowly lobed, sessile or terminating minute style; synandrodial portion of spadix constricted, narrow; male flowers: stamens 2-6, sessile, thecae dehiscent by terminal pore; appendage cylindrical. Fruit a berry; seeds many or several.
10-12 species in tropical and subtropical Asia. Four species in Taiwan.
