型態特徵

Freshwater perennial herbs with submersed or floating leaves; rootstocks tuberous. Leaves mostly basal, long petiolate, linear to oblong, with few primary parallel veins and numerous transverse secondary veins. Inflorescence simple or branched, spike-like, without bracts. Flowers usually bisexual or rarely unisexual by abortion; perianth segments 1-3, petaloid or bract-like, equal or unequal, or absent: stamens mostly 6 or more, free, persistent, hypogynous, anthers 2-celled, vertically dehiscent, extrorse; gynoecium apocarpous, carpels 3-6, sessile, style short, mostly slender, tapering; ovules 2 or more per cell, basal, anatropous. Fruit a follicle. Seeds without endosperm.

Only one genus, about 30 species in the tropics of the Old World and in South Africa.
