Trees or shrubs; juice often milky and acrid. Leaves alternate, very rarely opposite, estipulate, simple or compound. Inflorescence various; flowers small, regular, unisexual, polygamous, or bisexual. Calyx 3–5-partite, sometimes accrescent. Petals 3–5, alternate with the sepals, free, imbricate or valvate. Disc flat, cup-shaped or annular, entire or lobed, rarely obsolete. Stamens as many as the petals, rarely more, inserted under, rarely on the disc, the filaments usually subulate; anthers 2-celled, basifixed or dorsifixed. Ovary superior, very rarely half-inferior, 1- or 2–6-celled, of 5–6 free carpels in Buchanania; ovules solitary in the cells, pendulous from the top or wall or from an ascending basal funicle. Fruit usually a l–5-celled, 1–5-seeded drupe. Seeds exalbuminous; embryo straight or curved; cotyledons plano-convex.
