Deciduous trees. Leaves alternate, slender-petioled, palmately 3–7-lobed, serrate, stipulate; stipules deciduous. Flowers apetalous, usually monoecious, in globose heads. Male flowers naked, consisting of stamens intermixed with small scales, in small heads forming terminal racemes, spikes or panicles. Female flowers consisting of 2-beaked ovary with confluent calyx, subtended by minute scales, in slender, peduncled, solitary, globose heads; staminodes present, on the margin of the calyx; ovary half-inferior, 2-celled; styles 2, elongated, subulate, recurved, stigmatic inside, persistent; ovules many. Fruiting head globose, formed by many capsules, spiny from the persistent styles; capsule 2-celled, septicidally dehiscent, the valves entire or split. Seeds 1 or 2, compressed, winged, the testa crustaceous.
