Annual or perennial succulent herbs, or shrubs. Leaves opposite or whorled, rarely alternate, simple, entire, exstipulate, or rarely stipulate. Inflorescence cymose, mostly terminal but often seemingly axillary, or flowers solitary. Flowers small, actinomorphic, bisexual, or rarely unisexual; perianth uniseriate; tepals 3-8, connate at base, confluent with filaments, forming a perianth-staminal tube, free portions often unequal, green or petaloid; stamens 4-many, usually 5, sometimes some becoming petaloid; ovary superior, half-inferior or inferior, mostly 5-carpellate, placentation axile, basal, or parietal; styles 0-5, stigmas 2-20. Fruits mostly locudicidal capsules, rarely septicidal or circumscissile capsules, and rarely drupaceous; seeds with voluminous perisperm.

About 127 genera, with about 2500 species; mainly in the tropics and subtropics of both hemispheres, and with the main center in southern Africa; three genera with three species in Taiwan.
